CONFERENCES

Third VA NGO Conference, September 2007

The Vietnamese American Non Governmental Organization (VA NGO) Network has just completed their third annual conference September 28th-30th in San Diego, CA. The mission of the VA NGO is to strengthen Vietnamese American Non-Governmental Organizations in order to have broader impact in the development of Vietnam.  This is accomplished by building a united voice on issues of common interest, delivering practical benefits for members, increasing resources for members for their organizational development and their work in Vietnam.  The goal of the conference was successfully met – to set the stage for the next level of social philanthropy and social enterprise.

Over 100 participants from 40 different organizations throughout the United States attended this year’s conference.  The conference provided three days of valuable workshops, that covered various topics including:  future of education & nursing, human trafficking, medical mission, fundraising,  governance and recruiting the “next generation”.  Keynote speakers also spoke to members about the impact of humanitarian work, relieving stress through laughing, higher education, and collaboration in rural communities.

Second VA NGO Conference, November 2005

The 2nd VA NGO conference was initiated by multiple Vietnamese American organizations with the vision of partnering with the people of Vietnam to help eradicate poverty and to promote development. As with the first Conference, VA NGOs are organizations and groups that fund, support, or operate projects in Vietnam, and are either founded or currently directed by Vietnamese Americans.

Twenty-four organizations and groups present at the Conference committed to be Founding members of the VA NGO Network and will work together to determine the detailed structure of the network within the next six months. The Resolution also called for Founding Members to initiate a multi-faceted collaborative program at a selected site in Vietnam in 2006.

First VA NGO Conference, May 2004

Intense deliberation throughout the two and a half days of the historic First VA NGO Conference, in a true atmosphere of friendship, cooperation, and openness, have yielded four key areas of follow-on activities among the participating organizations:
• To foster better communication and information-sharing between VA-NGOs to leverage one another’s experience and resources and facilitate collaboration
• To enable more concerted efforts in exploring new funding sources such as governmental agencies, foundations, and corporations
• To promote public education and advocacy, in the United States and elsewhere, to inform stakeholders of the important role of VA-NGOs in humanitarian and development work in Việt Nam
• To deliver technical assistance to VA-NGOs to help build organizational capacity and improve operational efficiency.

The 2004 Conference Planning Committee consisted of Pacific Links Foundation, East Meets West Foundation, Social Assistance Program to Vietnam (SAP-VN) and Fund for the Encouragement of Self-Reliance (FESR). More than 32 organizations and groups attended the historic first conference. Funders for the Conference included Vietnamese american private donors, Ford Foundation, Asia Foundation, Fund for the Encouragement of Self-Reliance, and the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation. -- The Conference was held on May 7 to May 9, 2004, at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California.
